The company was incorporated as Ferment-A-Feeds by Don Hess. It was started as a business to recover cheese whey from creameries that had a disposal problem. The whey was dried on a carrier of corn gluten feed and sold to local hog producers in Northern Iowa and Southern Minnesota.
Ferment-A-Feeds was purchased by William R. Holt and the name was changed to Fermented Products, Inc. Recognizing the benefits of lactic acid and fermentation by-products in livestock, a process to ferment the whey was refined and perfected.
A patent was issued on a cultured lactic acid fermentation product, Kulactic®. This product was sold to feed manufacturers throughout the upper Midwest and Canada.
